Blue elephants tied to posts in a brown field, circus tent stripes behind them. A circus came to town when I was living in Eugene, Oregon. I went to the area where they were setting up to sketch the elephants that were chained to spikes in the ground. It was heartbreaking. They were truly "blue", unhappy elephants. One was thrashing about trying to get free. Originally the painting had many other objects in it, trucks, people, other animals. But when I eliminated everything but the elephants and the suggestion of a tent, I felt that the painting really worked. I wanted to emphacize the injustice of holding animals captive and using them for entertainment. The post with a chain leading to us is accusatory. We humans did this.
